Columbus — The Columbus State men's golf team finished day one of the Aflac/Cougar Invitational tied for second place in rainy conditions at the Country Club of Columbus on Monday.

Play was stopped for one hour and 54 minutes due to inclement weather. Day one was scheduled for two rounds but rain allowed only the first round and a portion of the second round to be completed.

The Cougars posted a team score of 294 in the first round of play, eight shots off the lead leaving them in third place behind Florida Southern and Delta State.

Redshirt sophomore Jesse Gibson led the way for CSU, firing a one-under par 70 in the opening round. Bryan Lichimo backed up Gibson's round with a two-over par 73.

Columbus State was making a charge in the second round before play was suspended due to darkness. The Cougars made up five shots on Florida Southern and pulled into a second place tie with Delta State.

Sophomore Yannick Gumowski was two-under par through 10 holes in the second round, after shooting an eight-over par 79 in round one. Gibson was one-under par through nine and in a tie for first place when play was called. Gumowski is currently tied for 35th place.

Jack Stumpfig was four-over par after round one and was even par through 10 holes when play was suspended. He will begin play in a tie for 20th place. Robert Mize shot a five-over par 76 in the first round. After shooting a two-over par through nine holes, Mize ended the day in a tie for 41st place. Lichimo was also two-over par in round two when play was suspended and is tied for 20th place.

The Cougars were a combined one-over par in the second round with approximately half of the round still to play.

Stephen Woodill (four-over par 113 through 27, tied for 20th), D.J. Tozier (10-over par 117 through 27, tied for 67th), Johan Swanepoel (13-over par 122 through 27, tied for 79th) and Cates Culpepper (14-over par 110 through 24, 84th) all competed in the tournament but did not count towards the team score.

Florida Southern currently holds a three-shot lead over CSU and Delta State. Coker and Georgia College round out the top five.

Second round play will resume Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. with the third round to be played immediately after.
