BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say three people were killed when a car fleeing a robbery slammed into their vehicle in Birmingham.

Birmingham police Sgt. Matthew Nicosia says a man, woman and an infant child were killed in the Monday night collision.

Authorities tell al.com that officers began chasing the suspects' white SUV after a Walker County robbery. The chase wound through that county and entered west Birmingham.

Birmingham police Sgt. John Callahan says the suspects' SUV ran a red light, then crashed into the vehicle.

The suspects fled on foot into nearby woods, and authorities were searching for them.

Birmingham police Sgt. Johnny Williams said a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy was involved in a second wreck after the robbery, but was expected to recover. Williams said Birmingham police were not involved in the pursuit.
