DOMINATION: Gamecocks top Georgia, shut down "Gurshall"

Posted: Updated:

If you would have told Gamecock fans at the beginning of the day that No. 6 South Carolina would shut down the most dangerous freshman running back duo in college football and beat the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs so dominantly, you might be considered crazed.

But at the end of the day, you would be exactly right and you probably could have a lucrative career in fortune telling.

South Carolina (6-0, 4-0 SEC) came out on top in Saturday night's top 10 matchup with the Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 SEC) by a score of 35 - 7, and it all started with shutting down "Gurshall" -- the running back duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall.

In the first five games of the season, the duo amassed 964 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns.

On Saturday night, Marshall and Gurley were held to just 76 yards rushing combined and no touchdowns. It all has plenty to do with South Carolina's crushing defensive line, who kept the running backs honest all night.

Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray couldn't get settled either as Jadeveon Clowney terrorized him for four quarters. In one play, Clowney leapt over a Georgia offensive lineman in search for the frazzled junior quarterback.

The Gamecock offense also played well in the first quarter, storming out to a 21 - 0 lead on the back of two Connor Shaw touchdowns and a kick return for a touchdown from Ace Sanders.

Running back Marcus Lattimore would also get the chance to shine against a team that he made a statement against just two seasons ago. Lattimore would get 109 yards rushing and a touchdown. All time against Georgia, Lattimore has 470 yards and 4 touchdowns.

It was a history-making day as well. The Gamecocks have beaten the Bulldogs three years in a row for the first time since the series started in 1894.

But the season is far from over, and the Gamecocks now must look to a showdown at Baton Rouge against the LSU Tigers, who will be looking to bounce back after losing to the Florida Gators.
