COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A couple of weeks after a Columbus middle school student pulled a knife on an alleged bully, the school he attended held a rally against bullying.

While addressing students at Eddy Middle School in Columbus, the school's resource officer spoke about the incident when 8th grader Jayquan Lozado brought a knife to school and told police he needed the knife to protect himself from bullies.

On Tuesday, students filed into the Eddy Middle School cafeteria to learn about the deadly consequences of bullying.

The school guidance counselor, Michelle Sanchez, says it's going to take everyone working together to fix the problem.

"It's not just something the school can do by itself.  It's going to take the families, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators," Sanchez said. "It takes the person driving down the street that sees a person being bullied on the side of the road and calls the police."

Eighth grader Matthew Sanchez says it's also going to take friends standing up for each other.

"My motto is when you hurt my friend, you hurt me," said Matthew. "I knew [Jayquan was being bullied] but I didn't want to say it, I wanted him to speak up to make him stronger.  Now I know if I see [someone getting bullied] I will address [the bully]."

Matthew says the rally taught him that not speaking up for victims of bullying is just as bad as doing the bullying yourself.

The students watched several news videos about children who've committed suicide due to bullying. At the end of the rally, the 8th graders gathered outside and released an array of colorful balloons to signify hope, change, and a positive future at Eddy Middle School.

As for Jayquan Lozado, his mother tells us he's been expelled from Eddy Middle School and enrolled at Daniel Alternative School in Columbus.
