Lee Co. Superintendent of schools accepts job in Jefferson Co.

Ending weeks of speculation, Lee County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Stephen Nowlin, announced Thursday that he has accepted the job as Superintendent of the Jefferson County school system.

Nowlin will replace current Jefferson County Superintendent, Phil Hammonds, who will be retiring in February.

"I love this place. I love lee County. It's the greatest school board I've ever worked with. Wonderful school system, wonderful staff, I feel like we've been involved in some progress here and I am certainly going to miss that," expressed Nowlin.

Nowlin sees the new move as a natural career step and a great opportunity to work with the state's second largest school system.

"When you're a coach you want to move up in competition level sometimes, you want that bigger school to work at and it's a good career opportunity for me. So I am really happy and pleased, and look forward to working with the Jefferson County Board."

However, what's in store for the Lee County school system? Nowlin believes that the board will make a decision on its next steps in the search of a new superintendent at the board meeting next week.

"The school board will be talking about succession plans; they will be talking about putting someone in as an interim and conducting a search. So I don't know what they're going to do, but they'll start discussing it at the board meeting Tuesday night and make some kind of decision within the next month."

Nowlin reiterated how much he will miss his time in Lee County and the people he has worked with since his start here in 2007.

"It was a good school system when I got here, and hopefully it's a little better now."
