COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Hundreds came out to honor a quintessential war hero. Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley died last week at the age of 92 in Columbus.

He was a veteran of three wars, whose actions in Vietnam were chronicled in the book and later the movie "We Were Soldiers."

The actor, Sam Elliott played his role in the film and he was known affectionately by his soldiers as "Old Iron Jaw".

He was laid to rest at the main post cemetery, alongside his wife who died earlier this year.

CSM Plumley retired after 32 years in the Army and received more than two dozen medals for service.
