(RNN) - Does ANYONE play defense these days? Look: 70-63, 51-41, 51-44, 56-49, 45-43, 49-38, 41-36, 52-40 all sound like basketball scores, not college football games from this past weekend. What causesMore >>
The Line King offers one explanation for why defense is becoming a thing of the past in the college football of today: Young people are just too darned soft these days … for them, sacrifice is eating an unfrosted pop tart … or settling for less than an unlimited phone plan. More >>
My good friend and editor Skeeter Brown warned me to tone down my rants this week. Seems he has received several threatening letters in the mail from $EC worshippers, although they were all written in crayon and three had return addresses.
So, The Line King will acquiesce.
My gosh, if there ever was a case for relegation out of the $EC Death Star, Kentucky is it. And why not relegation? If the English Premier League can do it, why not here? It would make this meaningless Kentucky Wildcat season worth playing or maybe it would just add to the pain, knowing you are about to be demoted to the SunBelt next season.
Speaking of which, SunBelt powers UL-Monroe, UL-Lafayette, Western Kentucky (obviously) and maybe Troy are all better than Kentucky, so it might take decades for the Wildcats to work their way back to the $EC. Just a thought for those who bow at the altar of the $EC.
The Line King doesn't know if Mizzou is trying to find an identity or taunt the $EC Uniform Taliban - outside of occasionally South Carolina, once in a century Georgia and this year's Arkansas (look where that got 'em) how many $EC teams have radically changed their uniforms?
This past weekend Mizzou's uniforms looked like something out of Rollerball and maybe they thought they were playing Rollerball. That makes four or five different uniform combinations - more than the Pittsburgh Pirates had back when Willie Stargell was singing We Are Family. Maybe they are mimicking Oregon, minus the good team.
The Line King steps back on The Man's neck with a 5-2 weekend. Stay thirsty, my friends, we're looking good at the top of the stretch, just a furlong and a half to go.
Oct. 20, 2012
LSU Tigers @ Texas A&M Aggies (+3.5) Noon ET, ESPN
L$U is the most schizophrenic team in the nation. More ups and downs than my wife's emotions and The Line King still stands by his earlier statement, that Kevin Sumlin will be one the $EC's best coaches - he might already be better than three-quarters of the current crop (you know Rocky Top would kill to have him). This is a classic case of one team coming off a HUGE game and win and the other coming off a game that they are lucky to have won. So take the home team and the points.
Auburn Tigers @ Vanderbilt Commodores (-7) Noon ET, SEC Network
Does anyone else see the irony that since the Feds have closed the casino, Auburn's football fortunes have hit skid row? Auburn has to win five of its last six games to even make the Birmingham Bowl. The Vandy fan has had this game circled for a number of weeks. My gosh, the world has turned upside down…take the ‘Dores and give the 7.
South Carolina Gamecocks (+3) @ Florida Gators 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS
Wow, what to do here? South Carolina loses, but covers an extremely tough road game. The Gators just don't seem to be the Gators of old - you know, the teams that would fly around the ball and the fans doing the Gator chop all night long. It's just not there this season. The winner probably takes on Bammer in Atlanta. The Old Ball Coach covered last week and has all year long, so let's take him again.
Louisiana-Monroe (+3.5) @ Western Kentucky 4 p.m. ET
Wild card selection: WKU has gone something like 16-2, with the two loses coming to Bammer and L$U. This is still a no-brainer, take the War Hawks.
Georgia Bulldogs @ Kentucky Wildcats (+24.5) 7 p.m. ET, FSN
Two teams that have both quit, but at different levels. Geogia's no-show at Carolina has to go down as one of the greatest eggs ever laid in college football history. At some point Joker has to pull his team through - or at least cover - and 24.5 at home is just too much.
How long before the booing begins? And so much for Orange pants sales. At this point of the season, it's Bammer versus somebody in Miami. Tide -20 seems like a piece of cake doesn't it?
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (+19.5) @ Mississippi State Bulldogs 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2
This is one of those games in the middle of your conference schedule and you go, "Eeeh! Let's just get it over with." The Blue Raiders are another Jekyll-and-Hyde team that occasionally shows up to play. They did dominate Georgia Tech and that's an understatement.
