WTVM 10/17/12 Editorial: CSM Basil Plumley

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The country has lost a great war hero known to many around Columbus and the United States Army.

Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley died October 10 at the age of 92.

Basil Plumley incredibly was a veteran of three wars: World War II, Korea, and Vietnam over four decades.

His actions in Vietnam were chronicled in the book and later the movie "We Were Soldiers."

Actor Sam Elliott played his role in the film, and he was known affectionately by his fellow soldiers as "Old Iron Jaw".

Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley was laid to rest with full military honors at the main post cemetery at Fort Benning alongside his wife of many years.

Mr. Plumley retired after 32 years in the Army and after receiving more than two dozen medals for his brave and loyal service to his country.

We salute command Sgt. Major Plumley, and we give our respects to his family for his great life.
