CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

A Chambers County man is behind bars tonight after attempting to carry out a murder and arson for hire scheme.

Jimmie Ray Sanders, 63, of Five Points, Alabama was taken into custody Tuesday for hiring someone to burn down an occupied home in Hogansville, Georgia.

The State Fire Marshals' office was contacted by concerned citizens about this possible case and in a joint investigation with the Chambers County drug task force and sheriff's office. An undercover agent was paid by Sanders to set fire to the home.

"This particular investigation stretched a period of a little over two weeks in which time an undercover agent was introduced to the person who was desiring to solicit the crime," said Alabama State Fire Marshall Edward Paulk.

Sanders has been charged with criminal solicitation to commit murder and criminal solicitation to commit arson of the first degree and has been placed in the Chambers County Detention Center under $1 million  bond.

A hearing will be set for the near future.

Details about the relationship between sanders and the targeted victim are not being released.
