FORT MITCHELL, AL (WTVM) -

A trip to the grocery store took an unexpected turn for five customers and workers at Rainbow Foods in Fort Mitchell Monday night when shots rang out near the grocery store at about 10 p.m.

Deputies say Nakavius Gary and Robert Gary Junior allegedly came through the front doors and robbed the cashier at gunpoint.

Melania Green has been an employee at the store for eighteen years, and even though she wasn't there at the time, she explained how scary this was for her.

"Well, they broke the window from this office, and I don't see any other damages, but they took money... they did take the money," Green said. "I'm scared, of course I'm scared, because anyone could die when somebody comes in to rob us.  We don't know if they could shoot any of us."

As they ran away, two neighbors stepped in and tried to help police, but Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said the good Samaritans were shot in the process.

"There was a confrontation in the road, between two citizens and one of the robbers," Taylor said. "During that confrontation, we're assuming that the second robber came back to help his buddy. They started shooting at the citizens - both of them were hit."

The suspects got away, but were later found by police with the help of tracking dogs under a nearby bridge.

They are now in custody and have been charged with first degree robbery and two counts of first degree assault.

Chris and Steve Mauko, the brothers who risked their lives to help catch the men, are back at home after a night in the hospital, and are expected to make a full recovery.
