Phenix City Fire Department awarded much-needed grant

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A popular sandwich shop made fighting fires a lot safer for a local fire department.

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded the Phenix City Fire Department with more than $6,000 worth of equipment Tuesday.

At a ceremony at the Macon Road store in Columbus, the department showcased their brand new gas detection and calibration tools.

Fire Chief Kristin Kenneday says these days fighting fires is more than a hose and water.

"We use those devices on a daily basis," Kenneday said. "Anytime we go into a oxygen depleted atmosphere, or an atmosphere with a lot of Carbon Monoxide, the device, helps our firefighters know whether to get out or take other measures."

Kenneday says the grant came at the perfect time because their old detectors were starting to malfunction and they didn't have the money to replace them.
