Burning case goes viral, rumors spread

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The case of 20 year old burn victim Sharmeka Moffitt is a hot topic on the web. Since KSLA News 12 first reported that Moffitt was being treated for burns at LSU Medical Center after a possible attack in a Winnsboro park, viewers took to Facebook and Twitter with comments.

"Social media has not just taken legs, but they have taken wings with this story," says Shreveport resident Lakesha Mosley. Mosley first learned of this story from a group text, and soon realized the story was also on her Facebook and Twitter pages.

The case became a trending topic on twitter under the hashtag #Winsboroburning.

@MISK30 reached out on twitter to major news outlets asking "Are you gonna report on the black woman who was burned by the KKK for wearing Obama shirt?"

Kim Dong posted on Facebook that "It was reported that a suspicious looking white person was seen in the area with a Romney bumper sticker."

Authorities have not said that there is any truth to these references.

KSLA News 12 spoke with Sharmeka Moffitt's mother some of the rumors.

"But they are saying things that are not true. That she was raped, she was not raped, she was not beaten, she was burned, 60% of her body," says Edna Moffitt.

In a Tuesday afternoon press conference Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas said that authorities linked Moffitt's fingerprints to a lighter fluid bottle.

Soon after this development was reported, viewers took to the KSLA News 12 page with more comments.

Melissa Sagona posted on the KSLA News 12 Facebook page "Bring charges against her, she had this whole state in an uproar."

The State Police will turn their evidence over to the Franklin Parish Attorney's Office, who would be the one to file charges in the case.
