AU seeks community input for the future of Toomer's Corner

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Even though the fate of the iconic Toomer's Oak trees in Auburn has not been decided, the AU Office of Campus Planning held two public workshops Tuesday to gain input from the community concerning possible enhancements to the corner.

"The thought is that while the future of the oaks of Toomer's corner remains somewhat uncertain at this point in time, that it would be wise for us to start the planning process for how we might redevelop Toomer's corner," explains Dan King, Auburn University Assistant Vice Presidents of Facilities.

After an introduction of the nationally sought landscape team, the audience was split into groups and asked to express their own opinions on what they believe should be done to the intersection.

After tonight, the landscape team will take the ideas and develop three or four plans, then return in November to share them with the public and receive feedback.

"The timing for this I'm not sure, you're guess is as good as mine... that uncertainty is why we think it's prudent to start the planning early here," says King.

Local business owners, like Tina Ware of Ware Jewelers, were in attendance and optimistic that these new developments would bring visitors to the corner to partake in the age old tradition of rolling Toomer's sooner than later.

"I think the University has some really great ideas. I was excited to hear that they can transplant trees that are 20 inches in diameter, so it's exciting to here that possibly could replace that with a new tree," explains Ware.
