LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -

Former Troup head football coach Charles Flowers filed suit in U.S. District Court in Newnan, GA on Friday, accusing the Troup County School Board of racial discrimination in his firing last February.

The Board fired Flowers after accusations that he had broken rules by recruiting two brothers from Lanett, AL to play football for the Tigers.

The complaint accused the Board of relying solely on the testimony of a West Point apartment complex co-owner, never talking to the mother of the student-athletes, or to Flowers himself, denying a chance for him to defend himself against the charges.

According to the lawsuit, Shayla Washington moved with her sons Jalen and Zaquanarious for academic reasons, not for athletics.

Troup hired Flowers in 2009, making him the first head football coach at a Troup County high school since integration in the early 1970's.

Flowers won a state football title at Shaw in 2000, and a state baseball title in the spring of 2001, becoming only the second prep coach in Georgia to win football and baseball titles in the same school year. He was also the head football coach at Dougherty High in Albany, and was the former Muscogee County athletic director.

Flowers is currently coaching the freshman football team at Smith Station High School in Smiths Station, AL.
