COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
New numbers show the unemployment rate in Columbus has declined. The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday the unemployment rate in Columbus has declined to 8.7% in September 2012.
This is down from August where the jobless rate was at 9.3%. This is due to at least 111 fewer layoffs and 1,385 more people with jobs.
In Chattahoochee County, however, the numbers are much worse. They have the highest rate of unemployment in the state of Georgia at 17.3%. Harris County has one of the lowest percentages in Georgia at 6.3%.
The state has gained 61,800 jobs since September 2011, making the total number of jobs 3,939,400. Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 9.0% in September 2012, down two-tenths of a percentage point from 9.2% in August 2012.
The jobless rate was 9.8% in September a year ago.
