AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
Health officials in Lee County are trying to figure out how a handful of children became sick with salmonella, and the key may be a local daycare.
A concerned parent alerted us late Thursday afternoon to the salmonella situation at Milestones Learning Center in Auburn.
We called the daycare and spoke with the director, who emailed us a statement saying on September 24 and October 13 Milestones Daycare became aware salmonella had been contracted in four separate cases of children.
The director says they took immediate action and reported the cases to the state health department.
A health department investigation concluded the infection was not food-related; therefore, it is believed to have been contracted from outside the center.
Milestones has taken immediate safety measures and continues to work with state agencies to ensure the salmonella infection has been contained.
East Alabama Medical Center confirms one patient has tested positive for salmonella and says another patient has been hospitalized with symptoms of salmonella and they are awaiting confirmation.
News Leader 9 is waiting on a call back from the Lee County Health Department. We will keep you updated.
