No more paper unemployment checks in Georgia

(WTVM) -

Paper checks will soon be a thing of the past for people who receive unemployment benefits in Georgia.

The Georgia Department of Labor is ending paper checks this week.

Starting Friday, people will have to choose between direct deposit into their checking accounts or a debit card.

Officials say the switch is more customer-friendly and secure.

The Department of Labor estimates it costs $19,000 a week to print and mail those checks, almost a million dollars a year.
