LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -
A multi-jurisdiction investigation led to the arrests of two men from Atlanta who police say are responsible for the distribution of monthly methamphetamine shipments to the greater Columbus area totaling up to five pounds on each trip.
LaGrange Police arrested Geovani and Martin Bautista at a convenience store on Lafayette Parkway. The men, who are brothers, were carrying nearly two pounds of meth at the time and holding $19,000 cash. The estimated value of the drugs is $72,000. Sheriffs from Troup, Muscogee, and Lee County, Alabama, along with Opelika Police, assisted with the operation.
"Tuesday's seizure of this amount of drugs, which is significant, shows people in Columbus and the surrounding area what I think is a great working relationship among all these agencies," said Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr.
While the two men sit in jail, law enforcement officials expect their removal from the drug trafficking circuit will greatly impact the flow of meth to the Chattahoochee Valley.
"Folks need to know that if they're going to engage in this conduct, we're all banded together as law enforcement officers and we're going to work the case. It doesn't matter what state they're in, we're going to continue to do so," said Lee County Sheriff, Jay Jones.
Further details related to the investigation could not be released due to the sensitive nature of the case and its early stages of prosecution. More information will be available when the defendants appear in court.
