ATHENS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

An Athens woman has been charged in the stabbing death of her newborn son.

Police charged Cassandra Norwood with malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault.

On Thursday, Athens-Clarke County 911 received a call from a resident on Great Oak Drive just after 1 p.m.

The caller said a newborn boy had been stabbed.

When police arrived at the home, they determined that foul play was involved and began interviewing the family members who live there.

Police did not release further details on what lead up to the baby's death. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct an autopsy on his body at the GBI Crime Laboratory in Decatur.

Norwood's first court appearance was scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday inside the Athens-Clarke County Jail. She appeared for her first appearance and remains in jail without bond.
