Capital murder suspect's arrest caught on camera

WEST MONROE, LA (KLTV) -

Ronnie and Rhonda Bryan watched from inside their West Monroe, LA, home as authorities flooded their yard and arrested a man suspected of killing his ex-wife and sparking an 11-hour search for their 4-year-old boy.

Parked on their private, dead-end drive sat James Calvert, 41, who was wanted in Tyler on a capital murder charge for the killing of Jelena Radovanovic Sriraman, 30, and suspected of kidnapping his 4-year-old son, Lucas Calvert.

"They had their guns drawn and were telling that man to get out of the car, and he doesn't get out of the car," Rhonda said.

Authorities say Calvert shot and killed Sriraman on Wednesday afternoon in Tyler before taking off with their son. West Monroe Police said he led them on a short chase before officers barricaded him in on Tyler Drive in West Monroe, LA.

"It was just eerie that it started in Tyler and ended on Tyler [Drive]," Rhonda said.

During the arrest, West Monroe Police said Calvert sat silently in his car.

"[He] just sat there with his hands on the steering wheel, so they ended up having to break the window and getting him out of the car and handcuffing him," said West Monroe Police Major. Jeff Terrell.

"Four minutes later I see a little boy, and that surprised me, and I heard the policeman say, 'Buddy, you okay? You doing alright?' You know, they left him in the backseat of the car while all this was going on, while they were getting his dad out. The little boy was just calm, he didn't cry or anything," Rhonda said. 

Police transported Calvert and his son to the West Monroe Police Department. Calvert was placed in a holding cell until booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center.

Louisiana Child Protective Services took care of Lucas until he was reunited with his 5-year-old sister and stepfather Thursday evening.

"The children had been asking for him. They knew what happened to their mother; they were very distraught. Everyone thought it was in those children's best interest to be reunited with the stepfather who loves them and has been caring for them as a father figure," said Shari Pulliam, the Child Protective Services Media Specialist. 

There is a long road ahead for this family now left to pick up the pieces after Jelena's tragic death.

"We are going to work with the stepfather and make sure he has all the resources at his fingertips to make sure that these kids have the grief counseling they need to get through this tragic event," Pulliam said. 

Meanwhile, capital murder suspect, James Calvert, sits in a Louisiana jail cell, after shaking up this quiet West Monroe neighborhood. 

Louisiana officials believe he will be extradited at the first of next week.
