MACON, Ga. (AP) - Education officials say Mercer University's local nursing program, which begins next fall, is part of a surge of nursing programs in central Georgia.
Mercer's program will allow students to finish their nursing degrees at either the Atlanta or Macon campus.
The Telegraph of Macon reports that many of the region's colleges and universities now offer nursing degrees, and others are jumping aboard.
Wesleyan College in Macon plans to begin its bachelor of science nursing program next fall.
Deborah MacMillan, assistant director of the nursing graduate program for Georgia College & State University, says demand for nursing programs is high as a nationwide shortage of nurses looms in the future.
In Georgia, a University System of Georgia study estimates the state will face a shortage of 40,000 registered nurses by 2020.
