MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Associated Press has declared Republican Mitt Romney the winner in Alabama.

Preliminary exit polling shows Romney was the favorite of white voters, older voters, born-again and evangelical Christians, and voters with household incomes exceeding $50,000 annually.

State Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead said there was never any question in his mind about who would win. No Democratic presidential candidate has carried Alabama since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
