Republican Rep. Rob Woodall of Lawrenceville will return to Washington after the freshman congressman defeated a Democratic challenger in his first re-election bid.

Unofficial returns Tuesday showed Woodall defeating Democrat Steve Reilly in metro Atlanta's 7th District. Woodall had 71 percent of the vote with 20 percent of precincts reporting.

Voters first elected Woodall two years ago to take the place of his former boss, Rep. John Linder. Woodall had served as Linder's chief of staff.

The 7th District is a Republican-leaning seat that covers portions of Gwinnett and Forsyth counties.

Reilly, an attorney from Lawrenceville, raised little money to compete for the seat.
