NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) -

A fairness hearing about BP and its settlement with thousands of people will go before a federal judge in New Orleans Thursday.

Billions of dollars are at stake, both for the claimants and their lawyers.

BP expects to pay out about $7.8 billion under the deal, on top of the $8 billion it's already paid to settle private claims.

However, there are questions about how to distribute the money.

Much of the settlement money will go to 15 oyster leaseholders for property damages.

Attorneys for the actual fishermen plan to argue how the money gets split.
