Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be difficult to detect, and survival depends on a quick diagnosis and treatment.
However, an Auburn University research team has created a test using a biosensor that will help doctors go from hours to minutes in identifying super bacteria like MRSA, a type of staph bacteria that can cause deadly skin infections.More >>
Police conducted an undercover sting operation this week to crack down on prostitution in the Woodlawn area of north Birmingham.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Birmingham narcotics officers went undercover to get prostitutes and johns off the street. They focused on the area of 1st Avenue North between 41st Street and 80th Street.
Over the three day sting, police arrested 35 people. Some of the charges include prostitution and a few suspects were picked up on felony charges.
Lt. Lloyd Jones with the narcotics unit says they've received numerous complaints from citizens. He also says officers in marked units have noticed the problem, but they can't get enough evidence to make an arrest when they're in a patrol car.
Jones says it takes several undercover operations to get prostitutes off the street.
"This has always been an area of concern. We've done several stings and operations in this area. This is nothing new for this area," Lt. Jones said.
Lt. Jones says they haven't run into any illegal immigrants during the undercover sting. He also noted they arrested more johns than prostitutes.
Today, officers are flooding the streets in marked units, trying to send a message prostitution will not be tolerated.
