HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville Marine injured in Afghanistan returned home Friday.

Lance Corporal Kendall Bane arrived at Huntsville International Airport just after 9 a.m. Friday. Dozens came out to welcome the wounded warrior home.

Bane has been recovering at the Walter Reed Hospital in Maryland for more than two months. He was shot in the legs and stomach while serving in Afghanistan. He received the Purple Heart for his sacrifice.

"Once I got hit, I was sitting there thinking, 'Man, this is happening to me. I thought about this a bunch of times, but this is actually happening to me,'" he said.

Bane was originally scheduled to return home Thursday, but due to flight and scheduling delays, he came in Friday instead.

"Just seeing all my family again and knowing that I am about to get in a car and go home and be escorted by the patriot guard, it's a good feeling," said Bane.

Huntsville Hospital will take over Bane's care.

Bane is a graduate of Westminster Christian Academy in Huntsville.

Bane knows he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but he said he is ready to take on the world.

"There are little challenges that get laid before you and you just take them on," he said.

They are challenges he plans to take day-by-day, with the help of his friends and family.
