The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control has announced its newest police dog is named Ace.

Officials held a naming contest in which children from around the area were allowed to submit suggestions for what the K-9 officer should be called.

They said over 300 entries were emailed from around the state.

The winning name was from Ashlyn, 10, a student at Sorrento Primary School.

According to the ATC, her mother wrote the child liked the name because, "he would be the Ace, the number one top dog, in helping to sniff out the bad guys."

The ATC said Ace is being trained to detect smells associated with synthetic marijuana and bath salts.

"The canine will enhance our success in cracking down on stores that insist on selling synthetic marijuana/bath salts to our children and will be used for educational programs throughout the state," ATC Commissioner Troy Hebert. "The canine is funded by fines and penalties and not tax payer dollars."

The ATC added Ace is also receiving training for agility, various searches, criminal apprehension and obedience.
