Pastor J.H. Flakes, Jr. died Monday morning at the age of 78. Flakes was a notable community leader and a longtime pastor at Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus.
Dr. Flakes began preaching at Fourth Street in 1961 and retired earlier this year after serving 50 years. His son, Reverend J.H. Flakes III, is currently serving as pastor of the church.

At his father's request, Pastor Flakes, III said in lieu of flowers that donations are made for scholarships in his father's honor as he was an advocate for education.
"Our family would like to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers and asks for their continued prayers at this time for the family," said Pastor Flakes, III.
