MCSD: Homeless…not helpless initiative

COLUMBUS, GA -Did you know there are over 1,500identified homeless and unaccompanied
youth in the Muscogee County School District? 

The Muscogee County School District (MCSD), inpartnership with the MCSD Homeless Education and Literacy Program (HELP),plans a donation drive to collect needed items for students who are unaccompaniedyouth or homeless. 

Schools andbusinesses throughout Columbus may participate through November 30, 2012. 

Donation items to becollected at each school level:

  • Elementary Schools:  Socks and Gloves
  • Middle Schools:  Travel Size Items for Hygiene Kits
  • High Schools:  Coats, Hats and Blankets

A special MCSDprogram is scheduled for Thursday,December 6, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries Columbus Public Library, 3000 Macon Road

Students, school staff representatives,the MCSD Guidance/Homeless Department, special guests from DavisBroadcasting (Foxie 105)  and otherbusinesses will be there to distribute the items to partners and communityorganizations that assist homeless children or unaccompanied youth. 

Parents are encouragedto be involved with the Homeless…Not Helpless initiative through the district's parentalinvolvement campaign, Be There, by sharing a teachable moment withtheir child.  Parents can access andsubmit a Be There teachable momentform to their child's school explaining why it is important to engage in theinitiative. The teachable moment could be selected to air in the Be There media partner's 5:30 p.m.newscast (WTVM) on Wednesdays throughout the month of November.
