Near San Diego (CNN) -

A 16-year-old California girl is lucky to be alive after being bitten six times by rattlesnakes.

Vera Oliphant was walking up a hill, near San Diego, about two weeks ago looking for a cell phone signal, when she stepped into a pit of snakes.

She's now recovering at home after four days in intensive care.

Doctors say if you get bitten by a snake, it's important to remember, you have more time than you think you do.

But the most important thing is to get to the ER as soon as possible.
