LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A number of petitions have been created in the last week requesting the White House to allow states, including one for Nevada, to secede from the Union.

According to the White House website, there were more than 6,000 signatures Tuesday on a petition requesting the Obama administration to "peacefully grant the State of Nevada to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government."

The petition was created by "Cody D." of Sparks, Nev. on Nov. 10, according to the website.

The White House website allows U.S.-based users to create petitions.

It showed a number of signatures made out by people from outside of Nevada.

The petition also showed a goal of 25,000 signatures needed by Dec. 10.

Multiple states have already initiated petition drives for similar secession requests, all made following the re-election of President Obama on Nov. 6.

A secession petition for the state of South Carolina opens with the first paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, emphasizing the right to separate from the government "whenever any form…becomes destructive."

Don Aliesi, political science professor from Furman University, said the Constitution does not specifically allow for secession of states, but it allows citizens to leave the country if they are unhappy with the government.

At least 34 states have created petition drives for secession.
