(WTVM) -

At last tally Wednesday afternoon, 48 states have submitted petitions on Whitehouse.gov to withdraw from the United States, including Alabama and Georgia.

These petitions are not backed up by politicians but that isn't keeping some from speaking up about it.

"I think it's the silliest thing I've ever heard of," said Alabama Governor Robert Bentley. "That's what I think it is. It's ridiculous. Anybody that even talks about it is ridiculous."

The state with the most petition signatures is Texas, coming in at just less than 100,000 names.

Alabama's has more than 27,000 names while Georgia has three petitions circulating.

Their numbers tally up to about 45,000.
