TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
One community is trying to help a young man facing serious health issues.
Holy Spirit Catholic School is spearheading the effort to raise money for the heart transplant 19-year-old Adrian Reyes needs.
Reyes has already suffered a heart attack and been diagnosed with Lupus. He has a disease that causes his limbs and organs to grow more than normal. Now doctors say he needs a new heart.
Reyes tells FOX6 News that he's overwhelmed that friends and some students he doesn't know are rallying behind him. Tuesday, they held a "Red for Reyes" day. Kids wore red and raised about $1,000 for medical expenses.
Catholic Services of West Alabama is also trying to help Reyes, who needs $300,00 to nearly $1 million for the transplant.
Reyes says that he's not afraid of dying despite the bleak outlook.
"I'm that worried cause everything happens for a reason. Doctors said I was a miracle. I don't see myself as a miracle. I see myself as another person. But I do believe in miracles. If this is something to show people my character because I want to emphasize, I want people to help other people," Reyes said.
