Protesters gearing up for SOA Watch Protest

Posted: Updated:
Formally known as WHINSEC the School of the Americas trains soldiers for war, but longtime protesters like Jake Weinstein say the school trains soldiers to torture innocent people.

"The United States uses military force to kind of enforce greed without any consideration of the consequences in terms of death and massacres and tortures for peoples in other places in the world," Weinstein said.

Ricky Ortiz is on his first trip to the Fountain City, joining thousands in a protest to close the school. "It's something that I enjoy doing and it's a part of the whole process, something that I can really get my hands dirty with," Ortiz said.

Lee Rials with WHINSEC told us Wednesday that the school does nothing but instruct soldiers in proper combat and does not partake in torture training methods.

"When you use color, when you use images, when you use movement and music it attracts people and it makes you want to find out what that message is," Ortiz said.

Each puppet and figure has symbolic connections to those who lost their lives at the hands of torturers who were allegedly trained at WHINSEC. While it's just the beginning of this year's efforts these protesters are looking forward for their chance to let their voices be heard.
