MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) -
If you're a comparison shopper, you can now add hospitals to the list of items you can analyze before you decide where to go.
Starting Thursday, the state will publish a monthly report online showing how hospitals are doing in preventing common infections in patients.
The state's new website has been three years in the making and will show you how each hospital is doing in terms of its rate of infection for four common infections that patients can sometimes contract while in the hospital.
The report will track urinary tract infections from catheters, blood infections from central lines, surgical site infections of the colon and surgical site infections from hysterectomies.
Alabama's chief health officer says the first report out today shows the state's hospitals are equal to the national average in urinary tract infections, and doing better than most of the country in the other categories.
"On average, Alabama did better than the national average," said Dr. Don Williamson. "So I think we can be very very proud of the high quality of healthcare that's available in Alabama throughout the state and be proud of the low rates of infection overall for Alabama hospitals."
