MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The United States Air Force has altered its strategic guidance proposal plan and says the C-130 aircraft from Maxwell's 908th Airlift Wing will remain stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base.

"While the decision is not final, we've been assured that the current plan no longer calls for removal of the seven aircraft from Maxwell," said Rep. Martha Roby, R- 2nd District. "This is obviously welcome news for Montgomery and the River Region, but especially for the men and women of the 908th and their families."

The Department of Defense originally decided to move the fleet out of Montgomery or to retire them for budgetary reasons.

"I am encouraged that the Air Force has listened to our delegation's concerns," said Rep. Mike  Rogers, R- 3rd District. "This is far from final and we will continue to work closely with Congresswoman Roby and the rest of the delegation to keep the pressure on."

The changes would have been part of a plan to save $487 million in defense spending over the next 10 years. A report published by the 908th found that retiring the fleet would have put 700 jobs at Maxwell at risk - a big economic blow to Montgomery.

"From legislation to personal communication with top commanders, we have used all the resources at our disposal to respectfully demand answers to questions surrounding the fiscal justification of this planned move, and I believe our efforts have paid off," said Roby. "We will remain diligent, however, knowing that the decision is not final."

"The 908th has been decorated with the Air Force's Outstanding Unit award," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-AL. "They are source of pride to us all. We have been in close contact with the Air Force and are encouraged by the news that they no longer plan to relocate C-130 aircraft from Maxwell. The decision is not final, but this is positive news and I will continue to advocate for the 908th Airlift Wing as the Air Force reaches its final decision"

"In these challenging budgetary times I understand we must make difficult decisions, but we must not do so at the expense of hardworking Americans losing their jobs," said Rep. Terri Sewell, D- 7th District. "This recent effort by the United States Air Force is an important step towards preserving our military's readiness as well as promoting the economic vitality of Alabama and this nation."
