TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

It appears the first shot has been fired in a long-standing Arizona football rivalry. 

Some Wildcat fans were up early Thursday, painting the "A" on "A Mountain" red.

That's an early strike in the annual Arizona State/University of Arizona football combat this year.

The Duel in the Desert is set for Friday, Nov. 23, in Tucson.
