PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Public transit in the greater Phoenix area is showing signs of improvement as Valley Metro Bus and Light Rail has reported their highest ever recorded monthly ridership with more than 7 million boardings in the month of October alone.

The 7,080,564 monthly boardings for October 2012 is a 10 percent increase for the regional transit system from one year prior.

The increase in ridership for the light rail is largely attributed to large special events such as the ASU vs. Oregon football game on Oct. 18 which saw the highest-ever single day ridership with more than 65,000 boardings.

"Significant ridership increases are an indicator that passengers are finding greater value and convenience by using public transit to reach their local destinations," said Steve Banta, Valley Metro CEO.
