Auburn police need clues after fire at Toomer's Oaks

Updated:
AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Auburn police are still searching for clues after the dying oaks at Toomer's Corner caught fire over the weekend.

It happened early Sunday morning after the trees were rolled with toilet paper following the tigers win over Alabama A&M.

Toilet paper draping the trees caught fire, but police are not ready to say if the fire was an accident or intentionally set.

Auburn University released a statement saying the Toomer's tree task force reports the fire did significant damage to both trees.

The trees also caught fire in 2010 after a home win against UGA.

Police hope video surveillance from a camera overlooking the corner may provide clues about the fire.

Alabama fan Harvey Updyke is awaiting trial after he was charged with poisoning the iconic trees nearly two years ago.
