Family loses home in fire; hope restored for Thanksgiving dinner

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The contents in family food boxes at Tuesday's night's Turkey giveaway quickly changed Cassandra Steurgill's hope for the future, a future that looked bleak three weeks ago, when a fire destroyed her family's home in Columbus.

"The whole trailer was gone we have been staying in motel rooms," Steurgill said.

As if things couldn't get any worse, health problems also became a blaring issue for Cassandra.

"I just went in and had them look at my heart because I'm having heart problems and I've been through a lot this month, so I thank God for what we do have," Steurgill said.

The latest problem staring her in the face what to do about Thanksgiving dinner for her family. Now, thanks to the men of the Columbus chapter of Omega Psi Phi. Cassandra says hope for a joyful thanksgiving has been restored.

"Somebody still care, God still lives in this world because a lot of people might not have nothing, its something," Steurgill.

Each box given away to several families came with a Turkey, drinks, canned vegetable, fruit, bread, eggs, and a number of other items. Cassandra says she and her three children are thankful for the chance to start fresh. And they'll be eating that Thanksgiving meal in a new 3 bedroom house, donated by a local good Samaritan.

"We are starting over, its hard, but I thank God we got each other for thanksgiving," Steurgill said.
