HAZMAT crews clean up diesel fuel spill off of I-20

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Crews have plugged the hole in the tractor trailer that was leaking diesel fuel off of interstate 20.

Just after 1pm, an 18-wheeler which was traveling westbound on I-20 veered off the roadway near mile marker 559 and came to a stop after running over numerous trees.

Officials say that when the truck hit the trees, the fuel tank on the truck ruptured and began leaking diesel fuel. Officials say between 50 and 100 gallons of fuel leaked from the tank until they were able to plug the leak.

HAZMAT crews responded to the scene and worked to clean up the spill. Traffic in the westbound lanes were backed up. Crews have cleared the scene.
