MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The mother of a woman who was allegedly beaten by her girlfriend's brother is pushing for more charges against the man accused in the attack.
Kristi Taylor tells WALA-TV that daughter Mallory Owens was attacked because of her sexual orientation. Taylor wants assault charges upgraded to attempted murder.
Eighteen-year-old Travis Hawkins Jr. is charged with beating Owens during a Thanksgiving gathering at his home. He's the brother of a woman Owens is dating.
The 23-year-old Owens remained hospitalized Monday with skull fractures, a broken jaw and severe swelling.
Defense attorney James Byrd says there's more to the story that meets the eye. He says the Hawkins family is receiving death threats over the case.
Prosecutor Ashley Rich says the assault charge was filed because weapons weren't used.
