High school graduation rates in the state of Georgia are among the lowest in the nation.

Under new federal measurements just released by the U.S. Department of Education, Georgia's high school graduation rate stands at 67 percent, ranking it behind all of its neighboring states.

The numbers are according to four year high school graduation rates in 2010 and 2011.

Only Nevada, New Mexico and the District of Columbia rank worse than the Peach State in education

In the past, states used varying methods to calculate their graduation rates, so the new numbers are unreliable for state by state comparisons.

The new data can be used by states, districts and schools to promote greater accountability and increase graduation rates, the federal education agency said.

Among states bordering Georgia, Tennessee scored highest with an overall rate of 86 percent, followed by North Carolina at 78 percent with Alabama coming in with 72 percent.

Nevada ranks last with a 62 percent graduation rate.
