COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The search for Muscogee County Superintendent is now down to four semi-finalists.

Right now their identities remain a mystery, but we do know that Phenix City Superintendent Larry DiChara is not one of these applicants.

He told us over the phone Thursday he was told by the search firm McPherson & Jacobson that he did not meet the search criteria. We spoke with the Thomas Jacobson,  owner of the search firm, who says each candidate was looked at fairly during their evaluation process.

"We vetted every candidate that applied. We vetted them against the criteria that is established by the board. We did extensive record and background checks and we compared them to that criteria and the ones that we brought forward we felt more closely meeting the criteria that the board had determined," Thomas Jacobson said.

A total of 22 applications were submitted for the school district's top job and that pool as been whittled down to four. Board Chair Cathy Williams told us Monday the board is hoping to have the Superintendent named within the coming weeks.

"Our goal is to have that person named and working on contract negotiations by the end of the year and then depending on how those negotiations move that is how we will know when they are going to be able to actually start," Williams said.

Williams did say that some of the semi-finalist are under contract and that the applicants were a diverse group.  We asked parents what they wanted to see in the next superintendent.

"I would like to see someone who is going to be active in the schools, active with the parents, making sure that schools operate on budget making sure they have the necessary equipment they need and that's for all schools north side and south side," said a parent.

"I would say somebody with some background pretty much that really knows a little bit about how the school district works and about kids and care about things, and somebody with a little passion, I need passion."
