PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Police are searching for a suspect who they believe choked, beat and robbed an elderly woman Saturday morning.

A 76-year-old woman was watching television from her recliner at approximately 3 a.m. in her home near 35th Avenue and Rose Garden Lane, according to police.

"She was approached from behind and choked unconscious," said Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department.

"I think it's terrible, especially this close to the house," said neighbor Pauline Hielscher.

"We are three doors down from what just happened. I am really surprised," said another neighbor Ron VanSickle.

Investigators said the suspect likely came in through an unlocked door. The elderly victim also was severally beaten.

"We also have some evidence that there may have been a sexual offense that may have occurred here as well," Crump said.

When she woke up from being choked, the victim found her home robbed and her car stolen.

"I will be sure to keep my doors locked and stuff like that," Hielscher said.

The victim's 2005 Chevy Cavalier was found late Saturday morning a few miles from her home. Police said a motive is not clear at this point.

"This is a despicable crime," Crump said. "It is a reminder to make sure to lock up. It is a reminder to make sure to have good lighting outside and it is a reminder for us to check on our elderly," he said.

Police said they may have DNA evidence from the scene.

The victim is recovering and has been communicating with police.

The only description police have is that of a medium-sized male suspect. If you have any information, you are asked to call police.
