MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's beginning to look a lot more like Christmas in downtown Montgomery. Monday afternoon, the official state Christmas tree arrived at the Capitol on Dexter Avenue.

Workers placed the tree, a 35 feet tall Eastern Red Cedar, in its traditional location at the top of the marble front steps on the building's west side.

The tree was grown in Bullock County and donated by Elizabeth Thompson, owner of the Feathers Plantation in Fitzpatrick. This is not Thompson's first tree to adorn the capitol.

Governor Robert Bentley even made time to come out of his office to inspect the tree.

The tree will be decorated over the next several days and will be the focus of the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday, December 7.

The lighting will take place at 5:15pm and is sponsored by the Garden Club of Alabama.

The event is open to the public and visitors are encouraged to attend the lighting.
