MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

WSFA 12 News management is pleased to announce the hiring of Monica Tassoni as our new meteorologist. Monica comes from KTAB in Abilene, Texas where she currently works the early morning and noon newscasts. Tassoni takes over for meteorologist Jeff Jumper who returned home to Pennsylvania to be with his family.

Monica is from Philadelphia and went to The Pennsylvania State University, one of the top meteorology schools in the United States. She is very excited to put roots down in Alabama as she is leaving the blue bonnets and big skies of Texas.

"I must say Monica is a quality meteorologist who really knows her science and is a true weather forecaster," said WSFA 12 News, News Director Scott Duff. "She is very talented and I am sure our viewers will enjoy her fun personality and am certain she will be a great addition to our weather team."

Monica has a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology and was very involved in Penn State's meteorology program, taking part in the Campus Weather Service, PSN, and Weather World.  She also was involved outside of the meteorology department, and joined Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity for woman. Through Kappa, Monica became involved in Penn State's Dance Marathon, the largest student run philanthropy. Monica is a proud Nittany Lion and loves any movie in the Star Wars saga.

"Monica's weather knowledge combined with her effervescent personality makes her a perfect fit for our team," said WSFA 12 News Vice President/General Manager Collin R. Gaston. "She is thoroughly qualified to forecast our unique Alabama weather patterns and will complement the skills of Rich, Josh and Eric very well," said Gaston.

"I am excited to be surrounded by the vibrant culture of Montgomery and all the weather that comes with it," said Tassoni. "My passion is weather and making a difference in people's lives.  I also look to grow professionally by working at one of the most respected stations in the country."

Monica will join the weather team January 10, 2013 after moving from Texas. She will work the noon and 4pm newscasts. Meteorologist Josh Johnson will work Today In Alabama as well as Alabama Live! While chief meteorologist Rich Thomas will work the 5, 6, 9 and 10pm newscasts. Meteorologist Eric Snitil will handle the 9pm and weekend duties.

WSFA 12 News has served the River Region for nearly 59 years and provides more than 37 hours of news per week in High Definition on WSFA 12 News and 24/7 on WSFA.COM and your mobile devices.
