COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Soon the students of Lonnie Jackson Academy and Rothschild Middle School won't have to worry about crossing a busy four lane road every day to get home.

"With that bridge there, they don't have to cross the street and that's better for the safety of the students," said Rothschild principal, Reginald Williamson.

The pedestrian bridge that kept them out of traffic was removed for four months for maintenance because it was showing signs of rust and structural deficiencies.

Late Saturday night, the bridge was put back in place and workers believe it will be open for foot traffic by the end of the week.

Shanathia and Tekeyah Mathis are sisters who attend Rothschild Middle School. They said, "It's just been a while since it's been up.  I'm very excited that it's up because Buena Vista road is holding up a lot of traffic.  The light turns red real fast so you're about to get hit by a car."

"I almost got hit by a GMC truck one time, a drunk driver I think, but you know, thank God I'm alright," said Darius Mitchell.

Even with crossing guards to assist students getting back and forth, it's far from an ideal situation.  The return of the bridge means less tie-ups for traffic as well.

"Thank God they fixed it because the school is right there and the kids might get hurt.  I'm glad they fixed it. The kids are safe, and I'm happy," said Mitchell.

With 500 students using the bridge every day, a lot of families will have less to worry about.
