Fire damages 4 apartments at Pam Court, firefighter sent to hospital

A Columbus firefighter went to a hospital Monday night after being burned while fighting an apartment fire.

Officials say he is expected to be okay.

In addition to the apartment where the fire started, three other apartments received smoke damage. A total of four families are affected and three will be assisted by the Red Cross.

Six fire trucks responded to a report of heavy fire coming from a building on Pam Court in Columbus. The fire chief said it took twenty minutes to put out the flames after their arrival.

A man in a neighboring apartment described how firefighters came to his rescue.

"Me and my little sister were in the room downstairs, and the whole time I heard beeping, but I didn't think [anything]about it," said DeAngelo Mitchell. "The next thing I knew, a firefighter came and kicked down our door.  I came out and it was blazing everywhere. I grabbed my little sister because I thought someone was trying to break in."

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but we're told it may have started in the kitchen of one apartment.
