The bomb squad with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a reported hand grenade found near State Route 74.

MCSO is assisting with what they're calling a suspicious device that has been "rendered safe."

Peoria police spokesman Jay Davies said an ADOT crew discovered the device. County EOD examined the device and believe it's a live grenade.

Attempts to disable the device by the highway were not successful, so it was taken to a nearby range to be destroyed.

There are no suspects or leads, police said.

SR74 eastbound from mile post 24.50 at Lake Pleasant Road to mile post 29 at Archery Drive was closed temporarily late Tuesday afternoon. The roadway reopened around 1:30 p.m.
